For 35 years, I have built, ran and grown three manufacturing businesses.
That meant doing the exciting things — winning customers, developing products, growing teams and taking the business forward.
It also meant doing the less glamorous things: managing cash, dealing with suppliers, making payroll, solving production problems, managing people and dealing with the unexpected.
I know what it's like to wear every hat.
I also know that the things you can get away with when a business is small don't necessarily work when it gets bigger.
I have now sold my manufacturing businesses and, happily, don't miss the feeling of Friday's payroll.
But I do miss the challenges, the problem-solving and the wins.
